I'm told I can punch a giant hole in the router using th DMZ funciton.  Im not sure I understand exactly how that works.  I want every computer on every node to have the same acces it might have as if they were all on the same LAN.  I know that makes most IT people cringe but bare with me here, I'm learning.

What IP address do I put in the DMZ field to accomplish that?

A) The routers 10.xxx.xxx.xxx address?

B) the rounters Lan ADress 172.xxx.xxx.001

C) Can I only punch a hole for a single Host on an individual MESH node?

Hi Dave, You would use the 172.27.0.X IP that the router assigned to the device (on windows use IPCONFIG in a command prompt, in linux use IFCONFIG). Or look at the DHCP table on the node itself. If you statically assigned the IP, then use that in the DMZ. There IS the option (under SETUP-LAN SETTINGS) to change the node from NAT to 1, 5, or 13 HOST DMZ, which then creates multiple DMZ's. That works by assigning each Device a name that would be called directly across the mesh. I personally havent used that feature yet, so Im not all-knowing yet, but I know its there and basically how it works. 73 KTF

That's what I can't seem to understand. If I use the device's (Host) IP in the DMZ field say 172.27.0.102. Then how does that allow someone from another MESH node to access computer IP 172.27.0.103? When I put the Host PC's address in the DMZ field it seems to completely cut it off from the net... But with only one PC on each HSMM node it's a little tough to get a full picture of what's going on. Reading the second half of your response, I see I'm missing a setting that tells the mesh how many Hosts are in the DMZ. And the options there are to change NAT to 1,5 or 15 hosts? Hmm… I don't see what NAT has to do with the DMZ but I'm still bouncing around in the dark again. I can tell I'm going to have a whole different view of proxies, firewalls and routers once I've got my arms around this. I shouldn't have wasted all that time memorizing the answers for a Net+ exam. 73, KC5SII

OK, try this: You have a PC on node-a, it gets DHCP'd to 172.27.0.5 (usually it does). On another node, node-b, you have your laptop. It too gets .0.5 (totally separate LAN behind each node, right?) So on each node, you add the .0.5 to the respective node's DMZ. On the laptop, to call the PC, you do \\node-a-name , and then a windows explorer box opens and you can see any shared files on the PC. Vice versa on the PC. Call \\node-b-name Once you have the DMZ set, dont worry about the 172.x.x.x addresses anymore. Just call the node name, or even the 10.x.x.x WLAN IP of the opposite node. The 1/5/13 DMZ thing is different. You could have 1, 5, or 13 devices EACH in their own virtual DMZ on each node. But dont worry about that until you get the NAT DMZ thing down :-) 73 Jim

I had to also reply via email. I can't see a way to attache a jpg to this: I tend to understand pictures better. Assume Mesh node KC5SII-101 sets 172.27.1.5 in it's DMZ and Mesh node FZU-101 sets 172.72.0.26. Then KA0ABY can access shared Files on N5UBY?
