New front page menu item for Applications

IRC is the first entry. Any node can do this since it has a light hardware requirement.

Captcha Now Installed on Web Site

Im sorry to have to say this, but the scum of the internet has driven us to install what is known as Captcha on this web site.

It is an application to prove you are humaaaaaan, by entering characters when registering, logging in, posting stuff.

Just today on my lunch break, I cleaned out 350+ bogus registered users. By the time I got home and to my PC, 10 more had shown up. And a spam to the forums.

One hint when having to use the captcha: if you cant quite make out the characters (including any shown punctuation), there is a double-arrow-in-a-circle icon that will get a new set of characters. Keep clicking until you get a set you can read.

We held off as long as we could, but with the site having such a large footprint on the web now, it was inevitable the crud would find us.

New firmware release

ad5oo released version 0.4.2 firmware on 8/21/11. Users with existing mesh nodes may download the new firmware using this link. All others should select the proper file from the Software Download Page to do an initial conversion of their wireless router. Firmware installation instructions are here. The release announcement is below. Details of changes in each firmware release are in the firmware change log available here. The text of the release is below

*****************************

Today the 0.4.2 release of the HSMM-MESH firmware becomes a reality.  Features have been added and bugs have been fixed.  Below is a summary of what's changed.

- fixed the bug which prevented port forwarding a range of ports
- added a waterfall display to the signal strength page
- improved hostname resolution on multi-interface devices
- status page now displays the number of olsrd restarts and how
long it has been since the last restart
- olsrd watchdog detects more error conditions
- fixed the "text page of death" on the mesh status page when olsr
is not running
- swapped the columns on the mesh status page
- make the txtinfo pugin available to the LAN
- fixed a previous neighbor display bug

The 0.4.2 patch replaces some of the running programs so a reboot will happen after the patch is installed.

There are a handful of development tunnel nodes out there.  The 0.4.2 patch can be applied to them without breaking the tunnel.  Theoretically.  If it breaks you will be entitled to a full refund!  Allow six to eight weeks for processing.  Seriously, it is highly recommended that the tunnel node users do the update (patch only) to take advantage of the improved olsrd handling.

New Map of nodes

Jim K5KTF has added a Googlemap with nodes and links shown.

Registered & Logged in users can find it under the HSMM-MESH Info menu.

As with any Googlemap, you can zoom in and out, pan the map around, etc.

The biggest problem with it right now is its lack of information, so we ask that you email Jim (@k5ktf.com) with your nodes information, and he will get it on there. For those who would like to see an HSMM-MESH node in use, I have linked my main node to my main router and internet connection.

You can view a link to it and more info under the "Web Links : Other HSMM Development Development Organizations" section.

It is limited in use, but you can see the gist of it.
