That is so idiotic!

You have robust, inexpensive plentiful hardware, that has been thoroughly documented by many sources, lots of hardware/firmware hacks, serial ports/usb, etc.   The WRT54G series is essentially a very versatile platform.

And.. they dump it.

I know...
It's a horrible thing that OpenWRT has dropped support for the legacy Broadcom chip in one of their later releases. Furthermore, it's a shame that a know issue with OpenWRT's Attitude Adjustment is that lower end devices with only 16 MiB RAM will easily run out of memory...
If only OpenWRT continued support longer...

We are not "DUMPING IT".

Whatever version WRT firmware has been updated/released as of the end of April will be the last version from us, and will be available on the web site forever till the end of time (or when the project is trumped by something better 20 years down the road).

WRTs will still be quite usable on that last version. I know Ill still take them to Field Day for the logging network. I will still use them around my QTH for stuff. I have so many, I cannot justify returning them all to Goodwill and buying all new UBNT gear. Just Aint gonna happen.

So chill, relax, and flash up another. They are still very workable and will be until YOU decide to upgrade your own.

The WRT54G is a great router, but it is showing it's age. I have a few and have no plans to get rid of them. That being said, Ubiquiti makes some nice powerful gear and I've been looking at upgrading.

And you'll be looking into developing BBHN firmware for Mikrotik hardware in the absence of Linksys right? :-)

Future vendors are being looked into as noted in the support announcement.

I don't know what vendor will be next, what I can say is the odds of a specific device/vendor are likely higher if someone whom has experiance with that hardware is willing to step up and test, submit patches for support changes (if needed) and test it out and lead the way for it similar to what happens with the Ubiquti gear.

Real world experience with the hardware is always an advantage over just picking a device.

So if anyone is willing to lead an effort now is a good time to consider volunteering.

So can you make a good guess that the gear that is out there on that last firmware will still work with what you come up with next? I suspect it will but I'm trying to bring a bit of calm to some local folks here that don't think building a wide area network between repeaters is a good idea after hearing that this is "EOL" Please do a short write up here or elsewhere and say what will work, what may break, and any other good info. If I just read what I have outside of the Webmasters comments above I would not want to try any of this for fear of investing too much time and effort only to have the build team go on to bigger things. If I'm wrong and you just want to go "The Ubuntu way" and change it all to add bloated features etc, then lots of luck in keeping any interest. I am attracted to this system because it is very cheap to get going and you have so far made a lean and good working mode that ANY ham new or old can understand and get involved in. Please don't do that. 73 K4RJJ Ronny

The real question is will they remain compatible with future versions? If not, then you have in fact, dumped them.

It is our intention to keep the WRT54G family as compatible as possible with future versions.  At this time I'm not seeing *ANY* real reason it won't be.  Maybe the WRT54G's won't have all the features of the Ubiquiti version but it should be carrying and routing network traffic, which is the most important item, for quite a while.

IMHO, it was a mistake to announce an EOL for the WRT54G.  Still, crap happens.  We're moving on!

I sent an email to Microtik a short while ago and they seemed very interested in the project and in helping in anyway they can. Hopefully someone will pick this up.

Let's hope so! We are using MicroTik hardware for HamWAN and it is GREAT STUFF!

Whatever version WRT firmware has been updated/released as of the end of April will be the last version from us, and will be available on the web site forever till the end of time (or when the project is trumped by something better 20 years down the road).... Where do I locate the mesh capable firmware for the FOUR WRT54G variants that I have shipping in to me (based on the "what hardware to use") now that I read about the EOL for this product and find nothing on the software download link but upgrade/downgrade for existing mesh nodes and non-mesh firmware listed. The hardware compatibility needs to be updated, as there are many hams that will be getting the Linksys gear and expecting it to be supported...until like me they are knee deep in the forums and find out it was dropped, but all the info is still out there telling new comers that equipment is supported. Please HELP!

Menu (<< on left ) : Software Download.

Then select Linksys

http://www.broadband-hamnet.org/software-download.html

Then any that say "firmware for a non-mesh <MODEL NUMBER>" in the description.

To those who think the WRT*** should be supported forever... How many of you build your own radios? Things change, some times you just have to move on. Sure, you can still have your WRT***. But, if, like building your own rig, that tweaks your fancy, you'd better learn how do do it on your own and not expect others to do the heavy listing for you. There, got that off my chest.

Just got my WRT54GL up and running yesterday. Kind of unhappy seeing this. Have ordered coax and antennas. Saw the note about problems with Ubiquity devices and did not consider them. Read hardware compatability which shows Wrt is supported. Kind of a waste of time and money.
