Open WRT talks about taking the router apart. I don't understand what this is about. It mentions an unpopulated 10 pin header with 2 serial connections, and a DB9 connector. Is this part of HSMM-mesh or something else. I thought my laptop would connect through the Network cat5 cable.

Thank You Trent KJ4kKAF

These radios are computers as well. You normally connect through one of the LAN ports and run the radio via the web page in the node. Historically Unix / Linux computers have had a console for debugging. The WRT54G has 2 serial ports, they just do not bring the connections out. Most normal users never know they are there. Hook them up and you have a serial port console where you can log in and have a command line Linux console. The second serial port can be used for anything you do with a serial port - hook up a GPS, TNC for your packet system etc. The Broadcom chip the whole router is based on has these serial ports built into the chip. So they are there if you have a use for them. They are TREMENDOUSLY useful. -Glenn KD5MFW

Small note: The serial ports are NOT present in the WRT54G version 1.0 and 1.1. In the v1.1 there are pads for the UART chips and associated components but they are unpopulated.

FWIW, FYI, IYGARA... :-)
