Several folks in Volusia County have recently expressed interest in HSMM-MESH. Due to the kindness of the HSMM-MESH.org folks, we now have a place to discuss a Volusia MESH without annoying the general membership in our Yahoo groups. (Well, no more than I usually annoy them.) I've installed HSMM-MESH on my WRT54GL and it was a piece of cake. I've got the use of a 24dbi 2.4 GHz parabolic (thanks, Bud) and am anxious to test things out. If you have a node, a router that could become a node and\or a 2.4 Ghz antenna to volunteer for some testing, please post here. Thanks & 73 Mark KV4I

Hello,
Glad to see some HSMM-Mesh stuff taking place in Florida.
Got a group here in Sarasota Florida, Sarasota County getting
ready to deploy some HSmm-Mesh nodes out and about also.

Hi, Eric,
We're just starting to marshal resources here for a proof of concept. Before we offer any services to local agencies, we need to know what we can do.
I've got one node built and some of the other local ARES members are currently scrounging around for WRT54GLs to flash.
I'd love to hear more about what the group in Sarasota is doing. I'll post a Volusia update as a new topic here as soon as we get to our next step.

Thanks for the information about an Orlando MESH. I visited the links but it doesn't appear to be the HSMM-MESH variety of MESH and I couldn't find any Ham call signs associated with the project. Is it an HSMM-MESH mesh? Do you know of any Ham radio operators involved in the project? Thanks, Mark KV4I

Hello Mark,
Well it looks like the HSMM-Mesh is really starting to roll here in Sarasota. We got 6 nodes up and running as of now. I'm helping about 10 more guys that want to get a router and come meshing around. Just wondering if you guys over there have a Access point up and running? I'm thinking if we can get a few more guys here running and get an Access point here, that we could tunnel to you guys. Then maybe we could tunnel out to the Texas guys. Looks like this could be fun.
I'm still learning this HSMM-Mesh stuff, but so far they are all turning to me for help as I appear to have the most time involved in it so-far. I try and do the best I can, but like I tell them, I'm still learning by the seat of my pants on this. I've been reading about this tunneling mode though.
I did enjoy reading your post about the video conferencing at a peer to peer level without using a internet but node to node. I've went to that web site and downloaded the software, now starting to play with it.
Anyway,
73's de Eric...KD4MZM... |

Hi, Eric
Glad things are going so well there. We're moving a bit more slowly in Volusia. Our current focus is developing within our ARES group a working proof of concept we can show to served agencies. We've been working out routing issues and learning how to deploy apps in a table top environment.
Now that we've got that down, we're preparing to go outdoors. Our current activities are building more nodes and learning how to package them. After that, we're going to test what kind of range we can offer. We don't have any "permanent" nodes yet so we're not ready to tunnel. I imagine we'll get to that after we can get a couple of fixed sites going.
Can you share some information as to how you packaged your nodes? Cable types & lengths? Enclosure types? and antenna selections?
I'm also interested in what types of locations are home to your six nodes. Are they in Ham homes? Served Agencies?
Thanks for keeping in touch,
Mark KV4I |

Hi - I've just gotten started with HSMM-MESH. I was in Rockville, MD a few weeks ago and was able to hook up with some hams from the Montgomery County Amateur Radio Club. I joined them in doing field testing with several nodes. Since then I have joined their Yahoo Group and I just happened to find a WRT54G V. 2 in my closet. I have now uploaded the MESH firmware and am looking for more routers. I'm not sure what happens next but it's fun figure it all out. I am in Cape Coral, FL a bit southwest of you.

Hi, Don.
I operate HF & VHF Winlink 2000 (WL2K) email as well as D-Star D-RATS but think an 802.11 Mesh is Ham radio's best option for moving High Speed data over RF.
Unfortunately, my efforts to obtain any MESH traction in Volusia County seems to have come to a standstill. Hopefully, you'll find a better response in Cape Coral.

Hello,,my name is Gene,,VE3IJD and I have an APRS I-Gate in Port Charlotte and just flashed a WRT54Gv3 router for Mesh too...nothing going on in PC but we are heading back to OwenSound Ontario where a friend of mine, Tom VE3TSA has been busy experimenting with MESH and he's the fellow who got me interested. Maybe when I bring my router back next spring you will have a great network going down here...73..Gene |
